| 南洋公学译书院为配合晚清军事、政治变革及公学人才培养的需要，在“中学为体，西学为用”方针指导下，近六年间从西方、日本翻译并出版了大量兵书、政法类书籍及教材。尽管译书院负责人、身为洋务官僚的盛宣怀在政治上存有局限，尽管“中体西用”作为指导思想在学理上是否合理，目前学界还颇有争议，但译书院事实上为建立晚清新式陆军、推行新政运动、培养新型人才以及推进近代翻译事业做出的贡献，实不容忽视。 |

| In response to military and political transformation in the late Qing Dynasty and official talent cultivation, the translation department of Nanyang College had translated a lot of military, political & law books and textbooks from the books of Japan and western countries in almost six years under the guidance of “Chinese learning as the fundamental structure, western learning for practical use”. Although Sheng Xuanhuai, the actual decision maker of the Department and an official of Qing government for foreign affairs, had limitation in politics, although there is dispute about the guidance in academic circle currently, in fact, the Department made contribution to setting up new style army, implementing new political movement, cultivating new style talents and promoting modern translation cause for late Qing Dynasty, which should not be ignored. |
