Abstract:Through a mixed research method, this article attempts to explore the group characteristics of the caregivers of grandparenting in rural China and new trends in their development. The study found that on one hand, the situation of grandparenting in rural China is on the rise: the main group of caregivers for intergenerational child -rearing in rural areas consists of people aged 60~70, with older people deeply involved in raising their grandchildren and showing a trend towards narrowing gender differences and balancing gender structure. On the other hand, there are some new phenomena in intergenerational child -rearing in rural areas, which are closely related to new parenting concepts and family economic conditions in rural areas. With the allowance of family economic conditions, the child -rearing model in rural areas will evolve from being entirely taken care of by grandparents to a new model where grandparents only partially undertake child -rearing responsibilities or even withdraw from child -rearing tasks. Based on this, the article believes that the segmented family structure resulting from the urbanization process in China has brought about changes in intergenerational support. Meanwhile, the country provides comprehensive institutional guarantees for modern families, becoming an effective way to improve intergenerational care and achieve rural revitalization.
