Abstract:In Waiting for the Barbarians , J. M. Coetzee shows the strong influence of “ hostility in imagination” created by systematic forces and “ depersonalization” in the field of situational forces on the human nature and behaviors of evil doers, changing people’s stereotyped cognition of human nature and evil behaviors. Although he has a clear insight into the darkness of human nature, Coetzee does not lose confidence in it. By portraying and praising the protagonist as an ordinary hero, Coetzee tries to convey to people that as long as we stick to the duty of human nature, we can resist the influence of external forces with our own willpower and avoid going to the evil end. Coetzee’s profound analysis of evils and humanity shows his deep thinking as a philosophical writer.
