Abstract:The stream-of-consciousness novel,The Eye of the Storm, makes extensive use of non-traditional syntax and language to reveal the erratic flow of consciousness. There is a clear context beneath its messy surface.Based on the theory of Mental Space Theory ( MSN in short) of cognitive poetics, readers can rely on the basic cognitive experience and the discourse schema to explore the features of MSN in the novel, that is,the back-grounding of the Basic Spaces, hierarchical embedding of the MSN.Building a three-dimensional MSN is helpful to clarify the context of the text, understand life perception in the consciousness of the characters, deepen the theme of the novel, and enhance the aesthetic experience of reading.
