Abstract:Based on the theory of collective memory, this paper analyzes the reports about Chinese womens volleyball team from 1981 to 2016 on Peoples Daily and discusses how the spirit of Chinese women volleyball team was constructed by media to be spiritual strength and collective memory. It is found that the spirit was interpreted to tenaciously striving to succeed and winning honor for the country in the early 1980s, and that was interpreted to not forget the heart, never giving up and the dream of China in crucial reform stage. The change is to meet the needs of social changes, and to strengthen national identity. Accordingly, collective memory is a kind of selective memory and the government set agenda for media so that the spirit of Chinese Womens Volleyball Team could influence people. In the process of collective memory construction, the media plays the role of reappearing and creating memory.
