Abstract:The primary purpose of the study was to investigate the reluctance to use the services of helping professionals cross culturally. The study provides an instrument for Chinese and American social workers, counselors, and psychologists to assess the probable level of resistance in given populations to receive their services. Knowing the probable resistance level of a population could aid helping professionals in devising strategies regarding the design and implementation of a variety of socialservice interventions. With the availability of the Mandarin translation of the FIHPS, not only will Chinese social workers be able to utilize the scale, but also human service professionals work with ChineseAmericans in the United States. The Mandarin version of the FIHPS also increases the opportunities for future crosscultural research collaborations between the USA and China.
