Abstract:Philip Roth in his writing depicts Jews’ alienation in American society. The sense of “outsider”, antiSemitism, and social unrest result in Jews’ alienation with American mainstream society. The individualism in American culture is accepted by Jews’ results in their cultural alienation. The Jews’ value alienation is embodied in the breaking up of the American Dream. The Jews’ political alienation is originated from deceitful American patriotism, continuous invading wars, political correctness, and McCarthyist terror. Roth’s alienation is derived from the historical facts of Jews’ alienation and the consciousness of worrying and being vigilant in peace time, which rouses his writing passion and enthusiasm to some extent.
