In his essay of 1939, Sartre exclaims that time is the theme of 〖WTBX〗The Sound and the Fury,the confusing plot and chronological disorder give expression to the deep reason for time in this novel, superficially, however, the tragedy of the main characters in this novel comes from the center character Caddy, who has never truly appeared, and actually, their tragic fates lie in their false outlook on time. This paper intends to interpret the four characters’, i.e., Benjy, Quentin, Jason and Dilsey’s outlook on Time to analyze their tragedies, so as to show Faulkner’s idea on time, i.e., we should forget the past, stand on the present and look to the future.
