    徐念慈的小说美学研究 ,对近代小说美学理论有突出的贡献。他以公允的态度对小说与社会、人生的关系进行了深刻而辩证的论述。其小说社会学研究 ,开中国小说社会学研究之先河。他参考黑格尔等西方美学家的理论 ,对小说的艺术特性进行美学研究 ,发表了一些颇具学术价值的见解
