Abstract:According to Landry and Bourhis,the functions of linguistic landscape can be classified into two types:informative function and symbolic function.By taking photos of linguistic landscape in six universities located in Hefei,a city famous for science and education in China,this paper initiates a multidimensional study on linguistic landscape in the educational field from the following five perspectives:choice of languages,transmission of information,types of public signs,power of culture and cultivation of ideology.Through statistical and corpus analysis,this paper reveals the underlying messages and symbolic meanings hidden behind linguistic landscape in the educational field,such as cultivation of mainstream ideology and game of cultural power.Some basic strategies regarding the reconstruction of linguistic landscape are also proposed in the following four aspects:policy making,standard development,academic research,and technical support.Under the background of educational globalization,we should pay much attention to the studies of communicative function of linguistic landscape as information carrier,as well as instrumental function of linguistic landscape as teaching resources.Besides,much more emphasis should be put on the interactive or symbolic meanings existing behind linguistic landscape.
