Abstract:Dictionary use is an essential strategy influencing the quality of translation. This paper uses questionnaire survey on the dictionary use strategies employed by senior college students of English majors in translation. The research reveals that the students have a great number of dictionaries but a small number of the types of the dictionaries, that a part of the dictionaries have low using frequency and can not meet the demand of the translation and that the students have fuzzy recognition to dictionary use strategies and have problems in extracting of the meaning of a word and cluing the information, therefore, the guiding role of the teachers is not sufficiently embodied, which objectively lead to the students not to be able to actively and independently look up the dictionaries. It is recommended that more emphasis should be placed on dictionary use strategies and that, in addition to teachers’ instructions, multiple means and measures should be adopted to equip students with dictionary knowledge and skills so as to bring into full play the function of the dictionary as a useful guide and assistance in translation.
