Abstract:Joseph Conrad’s turn to stories focusing on his protagonists’ relationships with women in his later career is a conscious decision, not an unconscious shift. He puts great emphasis on descriptions of the sexually stereotyped protagonists. The tension between idealism and skepticism is a feature of all his work. He both affirms and denies the transcendent aspirations of men. He uses both realism and romanticism in his writing.
