| Doris Lessing’s African works roughly depict three categories of white female settlers on the farm on South African Veld. Mary Turner and Mrs. Carruthers represent poverty stricken, lonely and depressed housewives on remote farms, Mrs. Gale and Mrs. Barnes those leading “normal” daily life but abnormal spiritual life, Mrs. Grange, Mrs. Lacey and Mary Turner the others among white housewives on the Veld. |
